What does nearsighted mean?
Nearsighted, or myopia, means that your eyes naturally focus at a point that is close to you and everything further away is blurry. The stronger the myopia the harder it is to see at a distance, and glasses are usually needed to see clearly.
In order to see clearly light entering the eye must be focused exactly on the retina. In myopic people the eye is longer than normal causing the image to be focused in front of the retina. This makes objects look blurry.
When objects are close to the eye, the light naturally focuses further back in the eye directly on the retina, and as a result the picture looks clear. This is why people who are nearsighted are still able to see things up close.
